The future will be different!

Over the past year and a half, many overlapping crises have forced us through major changes. Everyday life was interrupted, art institutions were closed, and we had to isolate ourselves from each other. The state of emergency highlighted the inequalities of existing structures, but also made it visible that sometimes structural changes can take place quickly.

The state of emergency forced us to stop and interrogate or ways of working and living. After this everything will be different, but could the change be for the better?

One of UrbanApa’s ultimate goals is to act as a changing and learning platform. Recovering from a corona has made us once more review our ways of working. In October 2021, we will return to the Ateneum Art Museum and this fall we will set out to look at possible changes and transformations.

UrbanApa needs you!

The thematic landscape of UrbanApa fall festival is “Tides and currents”. We set out to look at the world around us: the changing tides and currents, as well as the possibilities of art to enable change.

How to change things? How to be different? What will change? How are tides and currents, transformation and metamorphosis, subversion and shaking present right now? How does the world move us and how do we move the world? Can change be playful, pleasurable, feminist and communal? Or utopian?

What opportunities, ideas, strategies, ways of working, methods or aesthetics do the landscapes created by the theme evoke? We don’t know, but we can wonder together.

ARE YOU INTERESTED?

We are looking for a diverse group of artists and makers from different backgrounds.

We ask what kind of opportunities, needs, ideas, ways of working, methods, aesthetics, the theme of the fall and the museum context proposes right now?

And what do you need? What would you like to do? What are you interested in?

You can propose:

  1. demo, lecture, performance, speech, concept, work-in-progress, etc. / max. 30min.
  2. Choreographic relation, working method, installation, score, etc.
  3. Something else! What?

The proposal does not need to be directly related to the theme of the year, but the theme can be used as a starting point, landscape or inspiration.

NOTE. The 2021 festival is shorter and lighter than usual. This can be considered in the proposal where possible.

How to apply?

Send us a CV or bio + free-form application (max. A4 or link to max. 3min. video) stating at least:

  • Who are you?
  • What do you do / project plan (what, how, why)?
  • Possible relationship with the fall theme?
  • Spatial and technical needs?
  • Is it possible to implement the proposal remotely, pre-recorded, stream or online? If so, how?
  • Are you / how are you free between October 26 and 31, 2021 (time of the festival)?
  • Other wishes?
  • Please equip all attachments with your name and contact information.
  • NB! that all participants are required to commit to the platform’s ethical guidelines, which can be found here.

Name the email “OPEN CALL 2021” and send your proposal via email to sonya@urbanapa.fi by 7.8 22:00. No late admissions. 

We will send a reply message to all proposals once the application period has ended. There is a fee for all selected proposals.

UrbanApa is an anti-racist and intersectionally feminist art platform whose purpose is to create space for multivoiced feminist and communal art making. Multivoiced feminist working means that we do not aim at a consensus. There must be space for new viewpoints and experiences, but the atmosphere must also remain respectful, safe and inclusive.
